Your points illustrate why so much of the "sustainability" debate has been frivolous or dishonest. Why aren't we sustainable? Because we insist on using resources that come from far away, whether it's avocados or petroleum- and no place so much as the desert Southwest. If we only chose to live off the current ecosystem, then we would be much constrained, and also sustainable from an ecological point of view. The good comes with the irritating. Thus, life in Arizona ought to be a bit harsher if it is to be truly "sustainable." And it will, it will.

One way or the other we are going to have to face this reality. Now, who will invest early in that which is inevitable?
